Canadian & International Law – Grade 12 (University)

CLN4U online explores a range of contemporary legal issues and how they are addressed in both Canadian and international law. Students will examine the foundations and evolution of legal systems, analyze the application of law in various contexts, and evaluate the effectiveness of laws in promoting justice, protecting rights, and maintaining order in a global society.

Unit 1: Foundations of Law

Students examine the nature, origins, and purposes of law, exploring the development of legal systems from ancient to modern times, and analyzing the relationship between law, morality, and justice.

Unit 2: The Canadian Legal System

Students investigate the structure of the Canadian legal system, including constitutional law, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, civil and criminal law, and the court system, analyzing landmark cases and their impact.

Unit 3: International Law and Human Rights

Students explore the development and scope of international law, including human rights law, humanitarian law, international criminal law, and the role of international institutions such as the UN and ICC.

Unit 4: Contemporary Legal Issues

Students analyze contemporary legal issues such as cybercrime, environmental law, Indigenous rights, and refugee and immigration law, evaluating the effectiveness of current legal frameworks in addressing these challenges.
