Description

ESLEO online provides students with the skills and strategies they need to make the transition to college and university preparation courses in English and other secondary school disciplines. Students will be encouraged to develop independence in a range of academic tasks. They will participate in debates and lead classroom workshops; read and interpret literary works and academic texts; write essays, narratives, and reports; and apply a range of learning strategies and research skills effectively. In ESLEO online, students will further develop their ability to respond critically to print and media texts.

Unit 1: Reading and Writing

Students share strategies and develop critical thinking skills to make them better readers and writers. They engage in activities designed to leverage existing knowledge to improve reading interpretation and the craft of well-informed written responses, building the independent academic habits necessary for mainstream courses.

Unit 2: Listening and Speaking

Students develop advanced listening and speaking skills through participation in structured debates, workshops, and discussions. They practice leading classroom conversations and presenting ideas clearly and persuasively, preparing them for the communication demands of college and university preparation courses.

Unit 3: Novel and Literary Study

Students read and interpret literary works, applying a range of analytical reading strategies to extract meaning and respond critically. They write essays and narrative responses that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of theme, character, and authorial intent, mirroring the expectations of mainstream English courses.

Unit 4: Media

Students look closely at the media and investigate truth versus fiction in order to be more critical about what they read. They evaluate the credibility of sources, apply research skills to distinguish reliable information from misinformation, and develop informed opinions β€” essential skills for academic study and life in a digital society.
