The Grade 1 Language course helps students develop essential reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that form the foundation of all future learning. Students learn how language communicates ideas, feelings, and information through words, pictures, and media. Instruction focuses on early literacy development, phonics, comprehension, and written expression while building confidence in communication.

Unit 1: Reading Development

Students develop early reading skills through phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, decoding strategies, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. Students engage with a variety of texts including stories, informational texts, and digital media.

Unit 2: Writing Development

Students learn to express ideas through drawing, labeling, and writing simple sentences. They practice organizing thoughts, writing short narratives, and responding to reading activities.

Unit 3: Oral Communication

Students strengthen listening and speaking skills through discussion, storytelling, sharing ideas, and responding to questions. Oral communication supports comprehension, vocabulary growth, and confidence.

Unit 4: Media Literacy

Students begin to explore how images, sounds, and words work together to communicate meaning in books, videos, and digital texts.
