Description

SNC4M online enables students, including those pursuing postsecondary programs outside the sciences, to increase their understanding of science and contemporary social and environmental issues in health-related fields. Students will explore a variety of medical technologies, pathogens and disease, nutritional science, public health issues, and biotechnology. SNC4M focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study and helps refine students' scientific investigation skills.

Unit 1: Nutritional Science

Students learn about the nutrients and other substances found in food and how they affect human health and well-being. They investigate macronutrients, micronutrients, and the relationship between diet and chronic disease.

Unit 2: Pathogens and Disease

Students investigate the major types of pathogens (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic), how they cause disease, the body's immune response, and the role of vaccines and antibiotics.

Unit 3: Medical Technologies

Students explore a range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical technologies, evaluating their scientific basis, effectiveness, and social and ethical implications.

Unit 4: Public Health and Biotechnology

Students investigate public health policy, disease prevention strategies, and the applications of biotechnology in medicine, including genetic testing, therapeutic cloning, and drug development.
