Description

EWC4U online emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will write literary, informational, and creative texts in a variety of forms. They will develop their writing voice and learn to make purposeful craft decisions in their work. Students will study professional models and give and receive feedback through a workshop approach.

Unit 1: Poetry

Students are introduced to the world of poetry, learning about different forms and studying examples in various styles. They experiment with writing their own poems and explore spoken word poetry.

Unit 2: Short Fiction

Students are introduced to short-short stories and full short stories, analyzing symbols and deeper messages. They learn to compress dialogue, develop 'show don't tell' techniques, and write their own original short story.

Unit 3: Creative Non-Fiction and Personal Essay

Students explore the craft of creative non-fiction, examining how personal experience, observation, and research can be shaped into compelling essays, memoirs, and literary journalism.

Unit 4: Drama and Playwriting

Students study the elements of playwriting, focusing on character voice, subtext, stage direction, and dramatic conflict. They write original dramatic scenes and receive feedback through a workshop process.
